It can be super challenging to stay focused while working in a space that requires so much of our attention — and one can only have so much caffeine. That’s why we’ve compiled a list of foolproof ways to boost concentration, enhance productivity, and crush that to-do list, without the extra lattes.
Organize Your Space
Often, our living environment can reflect our inner state, and vice versa. If you’re feeling “all over the place” that may be because your things are, well, all over the place. Making your bed, tidying your desk, and doing the dishes can provide less visual distraction for the eye, and also free up some inner space for concentration.
Take Breaks
“A watched pot never boils” and the same goes for that work project you just can’t seem to finish. If you’re sitting at your desk waiting for inspiration to strike, think again. A quiet, introspective solo activity is better for creativity than racking your brain for ideas. Try taking a walk, doing some meditation, or blowing off some steam with a brisk run.
“Square Breathing”
Consciously regulating your breath brings fresh oxygen to your body, which can improve your energy and focus, among other things. Try “square breathing,” for a good intro to breathwork. To get started, exhale all the air out of your lungs. Then, inhale for a count of four, hold your breath for four, exhale for four, and then hold for another four before inhaling again. Repeat as necessary (we suggest trying it out for one minute to start).
